Museum Summer Debate about the privatisation of museums

Details:  The first Museum Summer Debate was held on 18 August 2008 at the initiative of the Netherlands Museums Association. It took place in Utrecht’s Centraal Museum. With these debates, the Netherlands Museums Association wants to achieve a more ‘in-depth’ discussion of specific important topics. The first debate took the privatisation of museums as its theme. Peter Berns held a presentation about the ten main pitfalls and lessons learned, based on his experiences with privatisation as advisor and Interim Director of a variety of museums (Museum Het Valkhof, Museum Gouda, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and others.). This was followed by a panel discussion, with contributions by Diana Wind (Director of Stedelijk Museum Schiedam) and Ranti Tjan (Museum Gouda). The Museum Summer Debate was attended by some 35 participants.

Guest lectures Radboud University Nijmegen

Details:  Holding guest lectures for 3rd-year Cultural Studies students in the context of the Art Policy and Art Management study programme. The guest lectures zoomed in on the museum sector in the Netherlands, using a number of examples from the speaker’s advisory practice. In addition, they paid attention to the phenomenon of museum privatisation.

2009-2012 Eastern Netherlands Culture Manifesto

Details:  

Result:   Formulation of a manifesto aimed at arguing the upgrading and reinforcement of the cultural infrastructure in the Eastern Netherlands with the Minister of Education, Culture and Science and the Dutch House of Representatives. The 2009-2012 Eastern Netherlands Culture Manifesto was presented to Minister R. Plasterk on 20 June 2007. This manifesto argues for a higher state-funded culture budget for the Eastern Netherlands. The Culture Manifesto was jointly drawn up by a variety of authorities in the Eastern Netherlands, namely the Provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel and the Municipalities of Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Enschede, Hengelo, Nijmegen and Zwolle.
